Dr. Sherberg

Dr. Sherberg found dentistry the perfect fit for him as he enjoyed helping others, desired to be his own boss, and wanted a 4 day work week. Practice ownership was always his goal. Having worked at a corporate dental office previous to opening his own practice, he learned how much work actually went into running an efficient front desk. He also knew that many of these duties were not performed properly if at all in most offices. As soon as he learned about Breakaway Support Services he joined. He explains “I wouldn’t have started a practice without Breakaway’s guidance.”

A graduate of the University of Connecticut Dental School, Dr. Sherberg decided to open a practice that focused on treating retirees. He envisioned his practice as a place where his patients would be able to get a high standard of care and wanted his appointments to be a bit longer so his patients would have extra time to talk to staff. To accomplish this, he knew the foundation of his front desk and staff must be strong. According to Dr. Sherberg, with Breakaway’s services in place, his staff could focus on patient needs during their visits while phones and other duties were being attended to.


“With Breakaway, the phones were answered, insurance was verified, confirmation calls were made, recall calls were made, etc. These are important things that are difficult for a dentist to track and manage yet are vital to a practice.”


When he learned about Breakaway Support Services, Dr. Sherberg was really excited by the prospect of Breakaway handling and managing a lot of the “grunt work” that goes into running a dental front office and the idea that it would allow his on-site staff to become the “concierge” of the practice. With at least 50% of his patients paying out of pocket, he knew reviewing multiple financial options and the in-house saver’s program would require his staff’s undivided attention. Likewise, many of his patients are retirees and love to chit-chat which makes appointments longer and limits the time staff has for administrative duties. Breakaway’s services offer a way for his practice to run at the pace comfortable for his patients and staff to work in a limited stress environment.

Since using Breakaway, Dr. Sherberg has found the support systems provide a perfect virtual front desk person. Appointments are still made or rescheduled on days the office is not open which he explains is a huge plus for a startup that is only open initially three days a week. Financially, his employee payroll hovers around 18% of overhead thanks to the fact that Breakaway takes the place of a front desk person. However, Breakaway doesn’t ask for raises, take PTO, or quit on short notice. He also feels, the Breakaway team is easier to manage than an in office employee despite them being off-site. He explains, “the phones are answered at an excellent rate. Insurance is verified properly, which is extremely important when giving estimates. Appointments are confirmed by a live person, which is important for me considering my retiree demographic.”

Dr. Sherberg believes that Breakaway was also crucial in determining that he had a dynamite location. He was able to utilize Breakaway’s vendors to improve marketing, accounting, and equipment efforts. He describes his start-up experience as “essentially, I am making the same amount of money as a doctor who bought an existing practice that produces $800,000+ per year, but paid hundreds of thousands of dollars less for it than he/she would have.”

When not in the office, he enjoys spending time outdoors at the beach and biking with his wife and two young boys. His hope is to soon take up fishing and boating.  Outsourcing time-consuming front office work allowed him to focus on his patients and ways to improve his on-site team. Thanks to Breakaway’s help, Dr. Sherberg explains “I was very profitable from day one and never had to use a dime of working capital after I opened.”

We are doing great. I opened from scratch 6 months ago in Louisiana. I used a lot of the marketing that Scott talked about and location and design tips. I also took the six month smiles course because of Breakaway. It has added revenue to my office. I think the biggest impact is the post card marketing and my location. We received a great review last week for one of our receptionists, who happened to be Breakaway's inbound phone schedulers.
 
We've had a good start thus far:
In December, we saw 121 new patients working 8 doctor days with a "profit" of $5,248 before doctor salary.
In January, we saw 166 new patients working 12 doctor days with a "profit" of $13,566 before doctor salary.
It's great to have a clinic that cash-flows its first month (actually 1/2 month) open.
Our patients love the Breakaway-style office design. My team and I especially love the tip-out bins and open storage / restock. There isn't a single cabinet (or place to hide inventory) in the entire office. I actually put tip-out bins as the storage method in each room and it's worked out great - it's amazing always having what you need without the assistant having to run to grab some item she didn't know had run out in the drawer.
I'm unexpectedly still working and managing 2 other locations, so I'm thankful to have the opportunity to outsource! And to have the efficiency of a Breakaway-style office so we can make the most of the time I do have in the office.
